Proper Care of a Child’s Teeth

19 Jan

Posted by Joseph Coupal

Your child’s teeth and smile are important for more reasons than just aesthetics. Your child needs to develop good dental habits, and proper care of their teeth and gums begins with you. Caring for your child’s mouth includes brushing and rinsing, routine dental exams, and any necessary dental treatments. This can include fluoride, extractions, fillings, or braces and more.

Your child’s overall good health is affected by healthy teeth and gums. Poorly developed and teeth can result in poor nutrition, painful and dangerous infections, and problems with speech development, not to mention self-image.

Proper care of a Child’s Teeth

  • The child's teeth and gums should be brushed at least twice daily and especially before bed.
  • Your child should see a dentist every 6 months.
  • When your child gets permanent teeth, they should begin flossing every night before bed.
  • When your child reaches the age of 6, braces and other orthodontic appliances may be needed to prevent long-term problems.

For a pediatric dental visit, contact Dream Smile Dental or call (781) 330-0900.

New Year’s Resolution #1: Improve my Appearance

28 Dec

Posted by Joseph Coupal

One of your resolutions this New Year may be to get fit, or in some other way improve your appearance. Well if it is more than just your weight or the shape of your body you want to improve, perhaps your smile needs a lift. Cosmetic Dentistry or Teeth Whitening may be an answer for you.

Through teeth whitening, the goal is a natural bright smile, not a startling white smile. The objective of teeth whitening, or other cosmetic dentistry procedures is to have your peers wonder “what has changed” about you.

Your coworkers and your family will ask if you’ve lost weight, have you had your hair done, is that a new outfit?

With less work and less money, you can affect your appearance and instantly have more self confidence than you have ever had. Dream Smile Dental was the first dental office in New England to introduce Laser Teeth Whitening; we have had over 15 years of whitening experience. Rather than attempting over-the-counter whitening methods, you should consult your dentist, because it is possible that bonding or porcelain veneers could be the better solution to your specific case.

Contact Dream Smile Dental in Canton for information and a consultation for your cosmetic dentistry or teeth whitening needs.

Resolve to Take Care of Your Dental Health

When it's time for New Year’s resolutions, many people resolve to be healthy. Well what about committing to your dental health? Dental health is directly related to your physical health and well being. Oral Health (teeth, gums and mouth) has a Direct Relationship to Your Overall Health

Taking care of your teeth and gums, allows your body to keep the naturally occurring bacteria in your mouth under control. However, oral infections like tooth decay and gum disease can be caused by harmful bacteria in your mouth when your dental health is neglected. This bacteria can enter your bloodstream.

Gum Disease or Periodontal Disease does not just affect your teeth. A correlation has been shown between oral diseases and conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and pre-term labor. There is no cure for periodontal disease, but Dream Smile Dental can help you maintain your current condition and provide therapy to help it from getting worse.

Resolve to maintain your dental health, contact Dream Smile Dental to jump start your health in the New Year.

Common Questions about Root Canals

15 Dec

There are many dental procedures, but it may be the root canal that has the worst reputation of them all. And because of its reputation, at Dream Smile Dental we get lots of questions about them.

It is important to know that very few root canals are painful, very few deserve their reputation. We often get asked, “Will I be in pain during or after the root canal?”

During the root canal treatment your mouth and gums will be entirely numb; you will feel nothing. After the root canal, patients are rarely in pain. There are a few extreme cases, and in those cases, the dentists at Dream Smile will prescribe you something for the pain.

Because of the reputation of the root canal procedure, many patients will say, “well, I don’t feel any pain; can’t I wait on receiving a root canal?”

Unfortunately, the answer is no. It is never a good idea to wait on any needed dental treatment, especially a root canal. If you require a root canal, it needs to be done as soon as possible in order to prevent further infection. The infection can spread too, and really complicate your health, sometimes seriously.

Lastly, we often have people wondering if their insurance company will cover a root canal procedure. But we can’t answer that question. Every insurance plan is set up differently. Therefore various procedures are covered differently according to their fee schedule. Dream Smile Dental works with most insurance plans. To find out what your plan will specifically cover, contact us.

Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease are the Leading Cause of Adult Tooth Loss

23 Nov

Gingivitis, or inflammation of the gums, is a form of periodontal disease. Three out of four Americans have periodontal disease which is the biggest reason why adults lose their permanent teeth.

Periodontal disease is inflammation and infection that destroys the gums, the periodontal ligaments, and the tooth sockets that support the teeth. It is caused by the effects of long term plaque build-up. When plaque is not removed, it is turned into tartar. Plaque and tartar irritate and inflame the gums.

The longer periodontal disease goes undetected, the greater the risk of tooth loss. Often there are symptoms of bleeding gums, or gum tenderness, but sometimes there are no symptoms at all. Being diagnosed with Periodontal Disease can lead to a loss of bone or attachment surrounding your teeth which could ultimately lead to tooth loss.

Periodontal Disease does not just affect your teeth. There are correlations between periodontal disease and heart disease, diabetes, and even pre-term labor.

While there is no cure, Dream Smile Dental can help you maintain your current condition with individualized therapies to prevent it from getting worse. Contact us for more information on Periodontal Disease.

Gum health is the foundation of good oral health. For healthy teeth and gums it is important to brush regularly every day.

But believe it or not, some toothbrushes do a better job of cleaning and taking care of teeth and gums better than others.

Most dentists recommend Sonicare electric toothbrushes for kids and adults. Try the Sonicare FlexCare toothbrush to experience healthier gums.

Take care of your gums for life

Gum health means good oral health, yet most adults suffer from gum disease at some point in their lives. When left unattended, it can even lead to tooth loss in adults!

Sonicare FlexCare can improve your gum health in just two weeks.
FlexCare cleans along the gum line, removing plaque while stimulating gums. And less gum pain and bleeding will allow you to enjoy the brushing experience more while developing better brushing habits.

Gentle cleaning to reduce inflammation

FlexCare+ Gum Care mode provides two minutes of complete whole mouth cleaning, with one additional minute of gentle cleaning for problem areas and along the gum line. Brushing in this mode, along with proper dental professional care, improves gum health by reducing gum inflammation, recession and bleeding, in just two weeks. And Massage mode uses patented technology to drive fluids to stimulate gums, resulting in healthier gums.

Replace Missing Teeth for a Healthy Confident Smile

For missing teeth there is a way now to have a permanent and natural looking replacement. Missing teeth are detrimental to your overall health and your own self confidence. Replace one or many missing teeth with dental implants for a healthy and confident new smile.

Crowns and conventional bridges or dentures are not your only options when replacing missing teeth. Dental Implants vary from other solutions because with the proper dental hygiene and care, they function as a normal, natural tooth. Proper oral hygiene will help keep your implants and your mouth healthy.

Dental implants, an effective method to replace one tooth or several teeth, consist of a metal anchor that is inserted into the jawbone, and a protruding post is outfitted with an artificial tooth which replaces the missing tooth both cosmetically and structurally.

The process of integration of the implants into your jaw helps your replacement teeth feel more natural, restoring functionality and improving appearance. Patients find the secure fit of their new tooth very comfortable which gives them more confidence. A smile with confidence is a natural and healthy looking smile.

Contact Dream Smile Dental to see if you are a candidate for dental implants.

Every Situation Calls for a Bright White Smile

Whether it is a first date or a business meeting, you need all of your tools and assets at your disposal. A self-confident smile should be one of those tools. With technology come choices that can help you smile with confidence.

Even the smallest change to your smile can affect the way you look and feel about yourself. Consider teeth whitening. But consider it the right way.

Over-the-counter whiteners are a bit of a cumbersome process that generally only whitens the front 6 teeth. Whitening toothpastes and rinses have minimal effect on the stained or yellowed teeth.

Teeth Whitening done at the dentist’s office is much more controlled, is easier to use, and produces better results. All toothpastes help remove surface stains and some whitening toothpastes contain gentle polishing or chemical agents. These have more stain removal effectiveness.

But these whitening toothpastes help remove surface stains only, they can lighten your tooth's color by about one shade. In contrast, light-activated whitening conducted at Dream Smile Dental can make your teeth three to eight shades lighter. In-office dental bleaching provides the quickest way to whiten teeth.

Call Dream Smile Dental at 781-330-0900 to schedule your teeth whitening consultation.

Head, Neck and Jaw Muscles Play a Very Important Role in your Dental Health

What is TENS?

Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation (TENS) is a term given to battery operated instruments that provide a gentle painless electrical stimulus through the skin to nerve pathways. At Dream Smile Dental, we use ultra-low frequency TENS to deliver a stimulus through the nerve pathways of the head and neck. These gently exercise the muscles controlled by those nerves, and causes the muscles of the head and neck to relax.

How are muscles related to dentistry?

Head, neck and jaw muscles play a very important role in your dental health. Different muscles come into play for posturing, opening, and closing the jaw and swallowing. The muscles that keep your jaw from falling open are small and go from the jaw upward through the cheeks, into the forehead and around the ear. If your teeth don’t fit together properly, these muscles are over-worked. Subconsciously holding these muscles tense for a long time can result in muscles spasms, and tension. Tense muscles restrict blood flow and oxygen to those muscles, and also prevent the washing away of waste products like lactic acid. This eventually leads to headaches or other head and neck pain.

Can’t I just relax these muscles?

No. If your teeth don’t fit together correctly, you subconsciously hold your jaw in a position that often causes muscled tension. It is very difficult to change this on your own and often requires a lot of training. Ultra low frequency TENS relax the muscles of the head and neck.

How does it work?

Electrodes are placed on your skin over the nerves controlling the muscles of the head and neck. The TENS unit is attached to these electrodes. It delivers mild stimulus to those nerves every 1.5 seconds. This causes the muscles to react, and it causes the rhythmic exercising of the muscle. As time passes, these muscles begin to relax and blood flow through them is increased. Because it is repetitive it causes the rhythmic exercising of the muscle. As time passes, these muscles begin to relax and blood flow increases clearing away lactic acid build up and producing healthier more relaxed muscles, resulting in comfort and relief. In most cases, the muscles become relaxed after 45-60 minutes.

When does Dream Smile prescribe TENS?

If we are treating you for a dental issue where we want to relax the head and neck muscles in order to find your best bite, TENS is applied in the office. However, there are occasions when we will prescribe a small TENS unit for home use called the BNS-40. This is a much smaller version of the office  unit which applies the same stimulus to the muscles.

We may prescribe the home unit for the following:

•   To relax your muscles before you come to the office for dental treatment or analysis.
•   To relieve muscle tension pain.
•   To determine whether relaxation of your facial and neck muscles will lead to pain relief.
