Kick Start Proper Oral Hygiene Habits in Your Child With These Helpful Tips

28 Feb

Posted by Joseph Coupal

Most parents understand their child's sentiments on dentists. Dental visits are important for children but children sometimes feel uncomfortable with dental professionals because dental appointments may cause discomfort. We suggest that parents take an active role in their child's oral health to address their child's fear of going to the dentist.

If you've noticed your child is lagging behind in oral health practices try sitting down with one of our professional dentists. We can provide some advice and tips for maintaining proper oral health habits. For other useful suggestions, you may also try the following tips.

Open communication with your child is the best way. Talk to your child about your personal experiences with dentists, proper brushing, and other oral hygiene practices so your child can relate to what you're saying. Your child's oral health sometimes depends on the attention you give so make sure that you give your child enough time.

Some children need extra help when it comes to maintaining oral health. For instance, some children who unconsciously grind their teeth should have a mouth guard to counteract this habit's negative effects. Younger children may need a timer when brushing their teeth so they utilize full time brushing.

For younger children providing a reward for your child after dental visits can be a huge incentive. Such as a toy or increasing their allowance for that week. Maintaining proper oral health in children goes a long way. As the child grows up they will continue with those habits and have fewer problems with their teeth later on in life. Important Information Regarding Wisdom Teeth Removal

You might be thinking what is so important about our wisdom teeth when they can get us in so much trouble because of the pain. If you are currently suffering from this kind of pain, maybe it would help you to learn some important facts about removing wisdom teeth. Our wisdom teeth usually emerge while we are at the ages of 17 to 21 and these are the third set of molars that we get. To many people, this can be the start of some serious tooth problems.

The problem with our wisdom teeth is that they often grow in the wrong way. This can cause the other teeth in the arch to get pushed out of alignment. This in turn, can cause some really bad teeth formations where other dental problems may also arise from. Among the worst that could happen is when the wisdom tooth grows through the gum causing an opening where bacteria, plaque, and other debris can enter and get trapped. This is usually the cause of the severe wisdom tooth pain that we often experience.

Therefore, the most common and suitable treatment for this wisdom tooth pain is to remove them. Here are 5 tips you should know about removing your wisdom teeth.

1. The extraction of the wisdom teeth depends on their position.

If your wisdom tooth is completely erupted from the gum, then it is much easier to remove it. The problem lies when the wisdom are deeply rooted into the gum and jawbone.

2. Will you feel any pain?

The pain caused by the pulling of the teeth can range from minimal to almost none existent. This is because your gum and the teeth will be numbed prior to the procedure of removing wisdom tooth. If the dentist decides that you need to be sedated, you will be given a sedating medication to minimize or eliminate any anxiety you might be feeling.

3. How fast can you recover from the procedure?

The speed of your recovery will depend on the difficulty of the removing of your wisdom teeth. Nevertheless, your dentist will prescribe a pain medication to help ease any discomfort caused by the procedure.

4. Expect to experience some facial swelling.

You should expect some facial swelling on the area where your wisdom tooth was removed. To help minimize the swelling, you can use cold compress and hold it in place for about 10 to 20 minutes on and 10 to 20 minutes off.

5. When can you expect complete healing?

Again, it depends on the difficulty of the tooth extraction, but usually it ranges from a few weeks to even a couple of months. But within the first week after the dental procedure, you can expect a significant improvement in the healing of the affected area. The healing should be enough to let you eat more normally and have less bouts of pain or discomfort.

Be sure to contact us should you need to have your wisdom teeth removed. It is always a good decision to remove these molars since they tend to produce more problems than not. Set up an appointment with us today and we'll be happy to help.

Children's Dental Hygiene Is Not All About Brushing and Flossing

Most dental problems can be avoided by educating your children on the importance of dental hygiene at an early age. Teaching them to brush regularly is just one part of the education process. We need to teach our kids the importance of brushing and flossing, but we need to teach them how to look after their teeth in other ways as well.

We all know that sugar is bad for the teeth, unfortunately it also tastes great. It is not possible to just cut sugar out of the diet. Kids and sweets just attract each other like metal and magnets. What we can do though is teach the kids to moderate the amount of sugar they eat. We need to provide alternatives in the lunch box and teach them that fruit is also a snack.

When the kids do snack, show them that a drink of water after the snack will help remove the sugar from the mouth area. Make it a condition of the snack that they drink a glass of water after they have finished eating. Try and get them to swish it around the mouth before swallowing. It is about minimizing the time the mouth is in contact with the sugar.

Be careful of the chewy sweets as they often stick in the small gaps of the teeth causing problems. It is advisable to avoid these types of sweets, especially if it will be a long time until the next brushing and flossing. If the kids insist on these treats then get them to brush their teeth afterwards as a condition, kids will do just about anything for sweets. Encourage your kids to drink juices and milks rather than fizzy soft drinks and cordial. By drinking milk they will also get the benefit of calcium, an essential mineral to healthy teeth and bones.

The key here is to teach our children that sugar is fine, as long as we eat in moderation and take the proper steps, like drinking water after a snack. Again it is the younger kids that will pick up on this faster, but with persistence and some advice you can easily teach your children the importance of diet and how that links to healthy teeth.

Different Types Of Dentures And Information About Them

For dental patients who are in need of dentures, the process can be a trying one, as a person's self-esteem can be shaken when faced with the loss of one's teeth. If you are in need of dentures, you will first want to know a little about the kinds that are available. Dentures are removable replacements for people who have missing teeth and some of the surrounding tissue. There are two types of dentures that are available to patients: complete and partial dentures.

Partial Dentures
Partial dentures replace multiple or sometimes single teeth. Since partial dentures are used when some teeth are still present, they are often used in cases of younger people who may have suffered an injury or gum disease. A partial denture can be attached to the teeth with clasps or with crowns with precision attachments, which are hidden clasps.

Complete Dentures
As the name suggests, full or complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing. While there are, of course, exceptions, complete dentures are usually used by the elderly. Complete dentures are made after the patient's teeth are removed and the gum tissue has started the healing process.

All dentures are custom made for each patient, tailored to the unique anatomy of their mouth and jaw. This means that you will need several appointments to develop a working model of the final product. Once your dentist has your dentures made, you will need further consultations to adjust your new teeth may be needed.

Take note: dentures should be taken care of much like regular teeth. They should be removed at least once a day to be brushed and cleaned with a denture brush and cleaner. Initially, your new dentures should also stay in overnight during the adjustment period. Contact us today for any questions about dentures or oral health, or to set up your next appointment.

Have you had your dentist ask you questions like, “Are you snoring or sleeping bad?' or “Do you suffer from halitosis no matter what you eat or do?' or “Do you suffer from acidity?' This is usually the dentist trying to figure out if you have other health problems due to bad oral health. Very often poor dental health is actually a pointerknowing about.

Mouth odor which is so terrible and everyone hates, could be the result of poor digestion, bad eating habits, gastroenteritis, and many other similar problems. High acidity also causes yellowing of teeth, plaque and even cavities. Snoring is another example where oral health points to underlying health problems - in this case it is respiratory disorders.

Recent studies show that even heart diseases could be detected through the analysis of the condition of your oral health. Tooth infections and abscesses can influence the immune system to such an extent that the heart would be affected as well. When there are acute and continuous recurring infections of the jaw bone in particular, it is often a pointer that the heart is under threat as well.

This is why it is important to visit us at least every six months so you would not only ensure the health of your teeth but also your health overall. Our professional dental staff would be able to tell you whether what you are suffering from is due to poor dental hygiene or poor eating habits.

There are a few things that you should always do to ensure that your teeth stay healthy and disease free.

1. Brush your teeth two to three times a day - generally the best habit is to brush immediately after a meal. However, brushing 2-3 times a day would suffice. Brushing usually helps to remove any remaining food particles from in-between teeth and also wash away any acidic remnants.

2. Flossing is a must - flossing is once again a very important daily activity which you should never ignore.

3. Avoid sugary foods - Generally speaking this creates acidity and gastric problems. When sugary matter remains on the teeth it weakens the enamel and causes cavities.

It is very important that you pay attention to the health of your teeth and mouth in general for neglecting this aspect may impact negatively the rest of your body.If you are experiencing bad oral health  problems or haven not visited us in the last six months contact us and set up your schedule today.
