Having beautiful teeth isn’t just about looking good; it’s about feeling good, too. Multiple studies have shown when your teeth and smile look great, you have more self-confidence and greater self-esteem. And what’s more, the people around you take notice. Research shows people who have attractive teeth and smiles are viewed as more successful, more confident, healthier, wealthier and, yes, even smarter.
It used to be having a picture-perfect smile meant years of costly and extensive dental work. But today, plenty of cosmetic problems can be addressed with dental veneers, thin covers placed on the surfaces of teeth and used to correct the appearance of an array of aesthetic issues, like:
gaps or spaces between teeth
deeply stained or discolored teeth
broken or chipped teeth
teeth with uneven or worn edges
teeth that appear too small
In fact, veneer application is one of the most popular procedures performed by cosmetic dentists today, offering fast, natural-looking results so you can feel your confident best in just two office visits. Here’s how it works:
Visit 1: Preparing for Veneers
During the first office visit, a small amount of tooth material is removed from the surface of the tooth. This important preparatory step ensures the surface of the finished veneer will be even with the surfaces of the teeth on either side and doesn’t extend over or beyond these teeth. Then an impression or mold of the tooth will be taken and the tint will be selected. The impression will be sent to a dental lab where the veneer will be created using durable, natural-looking porcelain. A temporary veneer can be placed on the tooth to protect it in the meantime.
Visit 2: Applying the Veneer
At the second office visit, the temporary veneer will be removed and the tooth surface will be carefully cleaned. Then the veneer will be “dry fitted” to the tooth and gently shaped as needed for a perfect fit before being adhered to the tooth surface using a very strong bonding agent. Once the veneer is in place, a gentle buffing will remove any excess adhesive and ensure it looks its best.
With proper care (that means regular brushing and flossing and routine checkups every six months), veneers can last 10, 15 even 20 years. Be sure not to bite on ice or hard candy, and never use your teeth as tools (that goes for all your teeth, not just those with veneers). One more thing: Veneers are designed to resist stains, and that means they also resist whitening agents. To make sure they match your teeth when they look their best, it’s probably a good idea to have your teeth whitened before having the veneers applied.
